Seen on Campus

Looking for a specific species on campus? Here is a list of species we've spotted, and where we saw them:

Canada Goose
Canada Goose (Branta canadensis): seen mostly in the Union Bay Natural Area and the Arboretum, as well occasionally by the Fountain and flying overhead.
Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias): seen often in the Heron Rookery, Union Bay Natural Area, and the Arboretum.
Hooded Merganser
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos): seen by the Fountain, in the Union Bay Natural Area, in the Arboretum, and flying above often.  Usually seen in small ponds or in reedy areas near the shore of Lake Washington.
Wood Duck
Western Gull (Larus occidentalis): seen commonly by Lake Washington in the Union Bay Natural area and Arboretum, as well as commonly flying above campus and occasionally perching on buildings or looking for scraps around campus eateries.
Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus): seen in the Union Bay Natural Area
Wood Duck:  seen in the Union Bay Natural Area and the Arboretum
Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata):  seen in the Union Bay Natural Area and in the Arboretum, also usually in small ponds and reedy areas by the shore of Lake Washington
Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera): seen in the Union Bay Natural Area along the side of Lake Washington or in the various ponds, as well as occasionally in the Arboretum along the waterside path by Lake Washington
Blue-winged Teal (Anas discors): seen in the Union Bay Natural Area and the Arboretum around the reedy edges of Lake Washington as well as in calm ponds in the Union Bay Natural Area.
Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola): seen in the Union Bay Natural Area in ponds or by Lake Washington as well as the Arboretum.  Not seen during summer, though, as they migrate north into Canada for breeding.
Barrow's Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica): seen in the Union Bay Natural Area in the small ponds or on the shores of Lake Washington, as well as on Lake Washington by the Arboretum.
